We Have a Winner!

18 Feb

Thank You!

Before I announce the winner of the “name Knox’s blog contest” I wanted to pass on a quick and sincere “Thank You” to everyone who participated.  I was overwhelmed and encouraged by the more than 300 suggestions that we received, and I am really encouraged by the level of interaction the blog is already generating.

…And the winner is!

With almost half of the vote (45.2%) “Opportunity Knox” emerged as the clear blog name winner.  Congratulations to Toba Azimi, who was the first person to submit the name “Opportunity Knox”.  Toba works as an Administrative Clerk at the Blood Donor Center on Nokes Blvd. and has won a $50.00 gift card to the Great American Restaurants.  Congratulations Toba!

Opportunity Knox is the winner!

…And away we go!

The new blog site should be up in a few weeks, but, until then, I will still be posting thoughts and questions and looking for your input and insight.

Thanks again for all you do!

Standing on the Shoulders

11 Feb

I had the honor to participate in the 50th anniversary of The Fairfax Hospital on Monday. The event took place in the tower lobby, not a usual venue for our events, but a significant one. As you can see from the photo, the podium was centered between the portraits of Frank Iams and Grace Lucas, founders of Inova Fairfax Hospital

The highlight of the event for me though was the story told by Mary Brown, our first OB nurse. Fifty years ago she missed the hospital’s opening ceremonies. Hours before the hospital opened, a woman in labor arrived and was admitted. When Mary’s supervisor called up to ask her to come down for the festivities, Mary replied, “I can’t, I have a patient and my patients come first.” We have all heard the phrase, “standing on the shoulders of those who came before us,” and this especially resonated with me at this event. With the portraits of Frank and Grace, front and center, I couldn’t help but think they’d be proud. Proud of all we’ve accomplished in the past fifty years and tickled pink that Mary Brown was finally able to cut a ceremonial ribbon and cake. We wouldn’t be here today if it weren’t for the strong shoulders, hard work and ethics of our early founders and staff.

I hope we remember this in our day-to-day tasks and we continue to provide a set of solidly built shoulders for those who follow in our footsteps. And as Mary so aptly reminded us, it’s about our patients, so Happy Birthday Patricia!

P.S. You still have time to vote on our new blog name (vote here). The contest ends next Friday, so vote for your favorite!

Which Name is Your Favorite?

4 Feb

I am overwhelmed by the number of creative responses to our “Name the Blog” contest. More than 200 of you submitted a name; and a lot of you submitted more than one! In total, the final list added up to nearly 300 names! Believe me when I say that it was really tough to whittle the list down to the top five. But I did it. (Just so you know, some of you submitted the same name. In those cases, credit was given to the first person to suggest the name.)

Now the name of the blog is in your hands. You get to vote for your favorite of the top five submissions. Obviously, the name with the most number of votes wins.
